Years ago, me and my daughter visited our favorite author, Edgar Allan Poe's cottage in Bronx, New york. We took a subway ride to that area of the city and found the place full of hispanic speaking people, most of whom cannot even speak english. I was glad I can still remember my spanish lesson in my high school days. Anyway, the station where we went down was near the underside of a bridge with lots of garbage on the street ( so much like Manila) and I find it weird since I thought New York is supposed to be "social". Walking around, looking for that park where the author's cottage is supposed to be located. Went inside convenience stores to ask about the cottage and about the author but nobody know anything and most of them can't even understand english. Por Dios Por Santo, what have we gotten into. Finally, we saw a park and a small house situated inside the park. We ask people around the area, still they don't know where the house is. Upon our closer scrutiny, There it is ! COTTAGE OF EDGAR ALLAN POE where he stayed in the last years of his life, 1846 to 1849. There is a guy who is staying inside, serving as a tour guide. It is in this cottage that he wrote his famous poem "Annabel Lee". The cottage is so small but simple and neat. His wife spend her last days here while stricken with tuberculosis. We are so happy to have visited this historic abode of Edgar Allan Poe.

Saw this "Few words of caution for Tourists" from a newly released local map for Angeles City. "Due to poverty, one can encounter desperate people in Angeles. So avoid being alone. unemployed , intoxicated males hanging around the streets may verbally insult you or your female companion, ignore them, beggars may approach you and try to grasps you, move as far away as possible. Never try to retaliate or shout expletives. Doing so may result to being detained by police, foreigners will always be found to be the aggressor, regardless of reality of situation. Con artists may try to trick you into a "remember me" scam. " Hey, remember me ? I was your driver before ? After reading this, even us locals will be scared !
